Our Top 3 Recommendations for Cruising with Kids!
Raising 4 little boys in Annapolis has given us plenty of opportunities to take them out on the water from a young age, and we’ve learned a few things along the way! Read on for our top 3 recommendations for cruising with kids!
Plan ahead! Before you make plans to go boating, take the weather forecast and timing into account. If the temperatures are forecasted for the 50s-60s, it may be chilly and you may need additional layers or waterproof blankets to keep warm. If they are calling for strong wind gusts, it may be a bumpy ride or even may be unsafe to embark. Also, take the time of day into account - plan around your kids’ best windows to avoid meltdowns. You may even be lucky enough for them to take a coveted boat nap!
Prepare your essentials! Our #1 essential could be many things, but first I’m going to say SNACKS! No one wants to be trapped at sea with hangry toddlers. We usually pack a smaller cooler bag with the kids’ water bottles, cut fruit/veggies, and non-messy shareable snacks. We like to avoid things containing chocolate, which can melt; too drippy, like watermelon or popsicles, and any choking hazards. Another essential for us is UV Protection - we like to apply waterproof sunscreen before the boys board the boat to ensure that everyone is protected. The younger boys also typically wear hats and UV sunshirts/rashguards for extra protection. No worries if you forget to pack sunblock, we have some on board! Our last essential to prep is well-fitting, Coast-Guard approved life jackets for all passengers under age 18. You are welcome to bring your children’s life jackets if you are chartering with us. We also do have child-sized life vests that you are able to borrow for the duration of your charter, just let us know in advance!
Pick a kid-friendly itinerary! Some of our favorites include checking out the massive freighters and container ships in the Chesapeake Bay, cruising by the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, and heading downtown to City Dock for ice cream and to feed the ducks! Some other kid-friendly itineraries include a morning charter to Black Market Bakers Port Annapolis for pastries + playground and Coconut Joes for cocktails + apps while the kids play on the Pirate Ship playground!
Cruising with kids can be exciting and memorable, especially with Chesapeake Classic Yacht Charters! Our signature CCYC Tote is filled with Chesapeake-themed books, coloring, toys, and kid-approved snack options, just in case! We hope to see you and your family aboard Proud Mary with us this summer!
